Maritime Mile in Haren (Ems)
23.08.2014
2014-09-23) The city of Haren (Ems), always having been the domicile of
the Jüngerhans shipping company, is until present time marked by the
shipping industry. It is by the general public therefore also referred
to as the â??shipping townâ?. The maritime tradition of the town with
its today about 24,000 inhabitants dates back more than 500 years.
Unlike many other industrial monuments, history and development of the
shipping industry can be illustrated with only a limited number of
exhibits in their original size.
The "Heimatverein", a local Association Preserving German Tradition, and the St. Nikolaus- Schifferverein have therefore made it their objective to better portray the maritime tradition and connectedness of the town. For this, a "Maritime Mile" was created that shall uphold the tradition of the shipping town and bring it closer to citizens and guests. Information boards shall are incorporated into the pavement of the sidewalks containing the names of shipping companies, shipping families or vessels.
The boards form a tour that starts at the Maritime Memorial and runs via the "Werftstrasse" (Shipyard Street) to the Maritime Museum, continues along the "Kanalstrasse" (Canal Street) to the "Schifferruh", at the mast of which a memorial plate with the names of missing or drowned sailors and seamen is attached. From there it goes through the "Schleusenstrasse" (Lock Street) and the "Emsstrasse" (River Ems Street) back to the starting point. Even those unfamiliar with the area can already recognize from the names of the streets along the route that shipping tradition can here be experienced. The Jüngerhans shipping company can of course also be found in the "Maritime Mile".
