MV "AQUILA J" involved in navy exercise
16.03.2015
An exercise was held in collaboration with the Spanish Navy on February
10th aboard MV "AQUILA J" to simulate maritime terrorism, piracy and
other threats.
The exercise took place during the lay days in the port of Puerto de la Luz in Las Palmas. MV "AQUILA J" there served the navy as a training ship because they could there test fighting various types of threats. However, not only does the navy profit from such an exercise, tremendous benefits also arise for the crew. During the exercise, communication as well as the response and the behavior of the participants were examined in order to obtain conclusions regarding the cooperation in the case of an emergency. The port of Las Palmas -an area of several square kilometers- is one of the largest ports in the Atlantic.
The history of Puerto de la Luz dates back to the 15th century, because in 1492 Christopher Columbus called there in order to - among other things - undertake repair work on one of his vessels. Today the port is due to its geographical location and its excellent infrastructure one of the most important ports for trade between Europe, Africa and America. 20.053.774 tons of cargo were handled there in the year 2008.
