ClassNK new strategic partner
03.10.2014
(2014-10-15) Seven vessels of the Jüngerhans fleet have since the summer
of this year until today received their new classification certificate
from the society ClassNK.
"We have strategically decided that we in future want to work together with another strong partner as a classification society regarding our 40-unit fleet," as Fleet Operations Manager Captain Jens Köster explains the background of the change. Previously, all vessels of the Jüngerhans fleet had had been classified with Germanischer Lloyd (now DNV GL). After the expiry of the previous certificates, the 600 TEU container feeder vessels MV "HEINRICH J" and MV "MICHAEL J" built on the Portuguese shipyard ENVC and five heavy-lift vessels were for the first time classified with ClassNK.
The society "ClassNK" traces back to the Teikoku Kaiji Kyokai (like: "Imperial Naval Society") founded in 1899 Teikoku which was initially involved in the development and regulation of shipbuilding and shipping in Japan. The first ship was classified in 1920. Six years later, the class characters "NS*" were registered with the Institute of London Underwriters. The society has since 1946 been known as "Nippon Kaiji Kyokai" (NK).
In 1968, the Japanese classification society was part of the founding members of the "International Association of Classification Societies' (IACS). ClassNK is organized in the legal form of an independent non-profit foundation under Japanese law and defines itself as "an impartial third party" that is [sic] committed to maximizing profit, but to promote safety of life and property at sea and to prevent marine pollution.
